About.

Ben Mason is a professional musician working as a clarinettist, composer, arranger in London. He completed his postgraduate studies at Trinity Laban where he studied clarinet under Michael Whight and Fiona Cross and bass clarinet with Paolo De Gaspari and Anthony Pike. During his studies he held the Barbara & David Allen Scholarship and was the recipient of the Wilfred Hambleton Clarinet Prize, the Wilfred Hambleton Clarinet Competition and the Charles Proctor Prize for Choral Conducting.

 

As a regular orchestral player, Ben has performed in most of the of the UK’s major concert halls and has appeared with orchestras such as English National Ballet, Glyndebourne Tour Orchestra and Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra. Ben is an active chamber musician with a keen interest in Harmoniemusik. He performs regularly with The Rosenberg Ensemble, of which he is a founding member, a wind ensemble at its core but has expanded to include other instruments. Ben is an advocate for performing the works of lesser known/performed composers and regularly programmes works by composers such as Mysliveček, Hoffmeister, Druschetzky and Krommer. He works regularly with the Waldstein Trio, with recent performances of Quartet for the End of Time at the Hellenic Centre and Angel's Arc at Wigmore Hall. He is also a recording artist and has recorded under the Da Vinci Classics label. 

Ben is an active member in the contemporary music scene and specialises as a collaborator and improviser in multidisciplinary projects, premiering over 70 new works to date, including Her Agency for female dance collective Women Wonder, Pierre and April Audiger’s folk opera Ayanfe, A Yoruba Opera and Amelia Clarkson’s ballet Dear Frances. Ben was recently involved in Nadia Berri’s Storm exhibition project, culminating in a performance alongside actors where works of OCD/BDD patients were displayed. He has also collaborated with the Southbank Gamelan Players in an ambient music project, exploring the effects of sound and space on the mind.

 

In the last few years, Ben has become keen in the exploration of electronic music and has started to implement elements of this into his own works, working mainly with drones, loops and the manipulation of acoustic and synthesised sound. His compositional output includes works for choir, solo clarinet and keyboard.
